Orphans

by Lyle Kessler

Ripe for a miracle, if you ask us.

Inside 6040 North Camac Street, a shoddy, old house in Philadelphia, on the eastern edge of the State of Pennsylvania, in the United States of America, on the North American Continent, on the planet Earth, in the Milky Way galaxy, swimming in the great ocean of space, a miracle is taking place.

You might be thinking, "Hey The 28th Minute, what sort of a miracle could possibly come from a couple of orphaned hoodlums kidnapping a former Chicago gangster?" You always were a little naive. This is no ordinary home. Within its walls are an extra large bottle of Hellman's Real Mayonnaise, some hydrogen peroxide, a heap of stolen jewelry, bourbon, tuna, newspaper, a television, and many more awe-inspiring wonders.

Abandoned by their father and haunted by the death of their mother, Treat and Phillip have been Dead-End Kids for over two decades. Phillip spends his days indoors, memorizing brand names and imitating Errol Flynn movies. Treat supports his younger brother and himself with dangerous nickel and dime stickups. When Treat's kidnapping of Harold, the Chicago gangster, goes awry, the brothers gradually find themselves taken under the wing of their kidnap victim. A pistol whip, a shopping spree, and a racist role play later, everything has changed.
