Don’t mind the mess.

The 28th Minute is proud to present Tape by Stephen Belber. The play has graced many stages around the world and was taken to the screen by Richard Linklater in 2001 with Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard, generating critical praise. Tape explores questions of motive, memory, truth, and perception.

Enter the dingy room of a Motel 6 in Lansing, Michigan. Vince is preparing for a mini high school reunion, as his old friend Jon is in town to screen a film at the Lansing Film Festival. The important weekend gets derailed after Vince forces Jon to confess that back in high school, when Jon had sex with Vince’s ex-girlfriend, Amy, he in fact committed an act of rape. As narcotics and alcohol fuel their discussion, Vince reveals that he has recorded Jon’s confession and that Amy is now on her way over to the motel room. The audience will be rooming with Vince, Jon, and Amy as they struggle to define themselves and their relationships to one another. A layered and rich show, Tape will spark discussion long after the stage lights dim.
